A Restaurant in an historic Cape Dutch Monument in the famous Church Street at Tulbagh. Offering fine local and international cuisine and a wonderful ambiance.

Your host is Carol Collins

The cuisine varies on a daily basis depending on the availability of fresh produce. Certain dishes have become trademarks at Readers but the focus remains on variety, fusion of flavours and combinations of unusual ingredients.
This provides Carol Collins – Silwood trained Cordon Bleu Chef - with a certain challenge in ensuring the creation of culinary delights using imagination, flair and superb presentation.

Offering simple yet outstanding cuisine, Readers has been able to maintain a standard of excellence that has created a notable reputation with both locals and tourists. Certain dishes have become trademarks at Reader’s but the focus on variety as well, as fusion of flavours and unusual combinations of ingredients are maintained.

Readers also hosts specialty functions such as weddings, guest chefs, theme evenings, fancy dress parties and private soirees and small conferences and caters for functions held at other venues.

The restaurant also serves as an art gallery (and gift shop).

Historic details of the building where the restaurant is situated

Built by the local surgeon in 1754, this is the oldest house in Church Street. It was purchased by the Church on his death two years later, as a home for the Reader (sick comforter), who also ran the local school in larger front “stoepkamer” until he died in 1792. On 10th January 1780, the Church Council agreed to build a new stable for the Reader and converted the stable behind the house to a wine cellar, which was later converted by the church to a parsonage school and the cellar school was inaugurated in 1849. The larger stoepkamer served as the schoolroom until 1818, when the Church Council met and decided to build a new schoolroom immediately behind the house. The main dinning room of Readers Restaurant was therefore the first place of learning in Het land van Waveren, while the room behind, was the first school ever built in Waveren and it remained a school until 1872, when the house was sold to the Theron Family. In June 1997 Readers opened its doors to the public for the first time.
