There's a place where everybody goes, there is a place that everybody knows, a place where one can eat, or take the family for that special treat! That's PADDAGANG!
In the heart of the historic town of Tulbagh, hungry souls will find this unusually named eatery a joy, where traditional Boland cuisine and fine local beverages have been served since 1821. Paddagang was recently taken over by Gerrit and Bubbles [Maretha] van Zyl.]
When we bid to run this place, I[Gerrit] said I believed the people who manage Paddagang needed to be locals who loved this part of the world and they needed to be individuals with a passion for food and a gift for hospitality.” Born and bred in the heart of the Tulbagh Valley, surrounded by the majestic Witzenberg, Obiqua and Winterhoek mountains, the Van Zyls fit the bill perfectly.
Bubbles worked for the Paddagang Vignerons (who own the restaurant and tasting room facilities) as their wine sales manager for eight years before embarking on her own catering and restauranteering ventures. Now she is back to put her mark on this fabulous spot with its long history and wholesome Cape Dutch dishes.
At Paddagang you find mouth-watering examples of the finest Cape Dutch and Cape Malay cooking. A tantalisingly creamy Smoorsnoek starter, served with homemade grape jam and freshly baked bread, Bobotie (spiced mince baked to perfection with a savoury custard topping) served with turmeric-infused rice and fresh vegetables, or the iconic Waterblommetjiebredie, a stew of lamb and asparagus-like indigenous water hawthorn.
The legend is, that in years gone by, during their mating season, the paddas (frogs) that inhabited the restaurant gardens would have to hop down a path past this building to get to the river at the bottom of the property to find their froggy companions. Hence the name, which can be translated into English as “frog’s passage”.
The setting is impressive. Paddagang is set back on Tulbagh’s picturesque Church Street, where one finds no less than 28 national monuments.
The expansive garden where peacocks strut about officiously (much as if they owned the place).and the terrace area is the perfect spot from which to contemplate country life while tucking into a Kaapse Bord (Cape Platter), a signature dish which features a killer combination of Bobotie, Waterblommetjiebredie and roast chicken.
While the restaurant is best known for Cape Dutch cuisine, Maretha caters for all tastes and patrons can also enjoy steaks, seafood ,pasta among the wide range of dishes on offer. When dessert time comes, settle in for good coffee, a glass of Brulpadda Port and irresistible baked Malva pudding, rich with apricot jam and bedecked with hot custard.
